MANATEES, Alligators and Birds! Oh, my . . .

Ok, I may have been a bit pessimistic about the campground at Homosassa Springs. We did venture out of the camper on Tuesday and whilst we were definitely in redneck heaven, most of the people we ran into were quite friendly. The campground itself was definitely a disappointment, but the ladies in the office cleared up the cancellation of the extra site without giving us any hassle. Add to that, they did give us great directions to get into the Homosassa Springs State Park (which was why I chose that campground) to see the manatees. Don't get me wrong, the pictures and activities posted on the campground's website are pure evil marketing genius but once I got to see the manatees, it was water under the bridge.

Here's our campsite - and we ran into snowbirds from Michigan who used to rent our site - they agreed with our assessment that some of the noises that came from the woods behind us must've certainly been Bigfoot. . .

The State Park had two entrances - one was on the major highway that is listed on the website, which is a gateway to their gift shop and isn't actually IN the state park! That was about 4 miles from the campground and I was pretty much resigned to not being able to get to the park as we didn't tow a vehicle, there was no public transportation. After talking to the ladies in the office - they were adamant that we MUST see the manatees and they gave us the back door directions to the park, which was still a good 1.5-2 mile walk but man, was it worth it!!

Top picture - one of the manatees swam under the bridge I was standing on and did a rollover, which was kinda cool. Look for the eye on the lower left of the face and the mouth and chin at the top of the pic! Bottom picture - we weren't in the park more than 2 minutes when this female swam right up to us, it's like she knew I needed to get a picture ASAP!

The alligators were just hanging in the sun. Not a lot of activity there. . .

Got a lot of cool pictures of birds, too. .

We ended the long walk home with a much needed cocktail at a restaurant that was actually recommended to us by one of our neighbors down in Key West (the gregarious Dave, who cracks beers at 9AM), called MargaritaGRILLE! He bragged about the size of the Margaritas but I ordered a mudslide and got at at least an 18 oz drink! It took me several ice cream headaches to get thru it. . .

Tonight, we are at Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort. We passed gas stations in Georgia with prices well below $2.00, the lowest being $1.87!

We pulled into the resort (and there's no evil marketing genius here - it's all it claims!), the entire site is a patio, with a nice seating area and beautifully landscaped. We walked around - the outdoor pool is nice (but it's pretty cool here), the hot tub is 104 degrees and there's 6 tennis courts (which I have no intention of using). Judging from the majority of the rigs here, we are definitely the poor relations!!

There's a ton of stuff to check out within walking distance, Bob and I are intrigued by a place called the "Salty Dog" - it looks like a good place to have our 2PM dinner tomorrow!
